On sait cependant qu’il s’agit d’un chant chrétien, et qu’il fait partie des cantiques de Noël les plus connus. On croit aussi qu’il aurait été écrit entre le XVIIIe et le XIXe siècle. Certes, ce chant a d’abord été interprété afin souligner la naissance de l’enfant Jesus, mais certains prétendent qu’il aurait été composé à l’origine sur un air de chasse.
