À la différence de l’Allemagne et de l’Alsace, le marché de Christmas de Bruxelles est une tradition relativement récente. En 2003 il a néanmoins été élu par les tours operators britanniques « marché de Noël le plus original d’Europe ».
The Brussels Christmas Market (called "Winter Pleasures") is made up of some 240 chalets spread from Place Saint Jean to the Fish Market, passing through the illuminated Grand Place, the Stock Exchange district, and Place Sainte-Catherine. As for gourmet delicacies, the few Belgian specialties are unmissable: for example, "caricoles," whelks or periwinkles cooked in a spicy court-bouillon, or "croustillons," small bites of crunchy fried dough finely dusted with icing sugar. The stalls display typical artisanal products from several European countries, ranging from santons from Provence to Advent wreaths from Austria, Switzerland, and Ireland. Not to mention delicacies from elsewhere: Scandinavian glögg (mulled wine), Italian panettone, and English Christmas pudding. Entertainment, shows and choirs enliven Place Sainte-Catherine and concerts are offered on Place du Marché aux poissons.
For its sixth edition of "Winter Wonders," the city is offering an illuminated walking tour through the historic center and the market. If you're lucky enough to be in Brussels during the festivities, the famous illuminated ice rink on the Quai aux Brigues is worth a visit in itself; not to mention the immense Christmas tree and the Ferris Wheel.
