But where do Christmas stories come from?
Les premiers contes de Christmas étaient davantage chantés que racontés, par les troubadours du Moyen Age. Les anciens se sont mis à les colporter à la veillée, peu avant la messe de Noël.
Il s’agissait de contes inspirés des Évangiles, élaborés autour de l’Histoire sainte et de la Nativité. Parallèlement, dans les chaumières, on échangeait à voix basse des contes dont les animaux étaient les héros. Par exemple, celui du rossignol qui avait réussi à endormir l’Enfant-Jesus par son chant si doux, ou l’autre qui rapportait qu’une araignée au grand cœur avait tissé sa toile à toute vitesse pour cacher l’entrée de la crèche où se trouvait la Sainte Famille. Ou encore cette légende qui raconte que du blé semé avait poussé et mûri en une journée pour que les paysans puissent répondre aux soldats d’Hérode sans mentir qu’ils n’avaient vu passer aucun couple avec un enfant.
Over the years, stories have carved out a place for themselves in the magic of Christmas. People began to talk about hidden treasures that were only discovered at Midnight Mass or miracles that only happened on Christmas Eve. Some daredevils claimed to have heard farm animals start talking to each other that night. From there, it was a short step to trying to scare each other with stories of ghosts appearing on the church steps and coming to take their place at Christmas Eve. In France, many families left a little bread and butter on the table for potential visitors from the other world.
It wasn't until the 18th century that Christmas stories became less about religion and superstition. Instead, they began to evoke the good and beautiful things Christmas brought out in people's hearts. The story developed into a literary genre that would last until the interwar period.
Towards the end of the 19th century, magazines and newspapers published their Christmas tales every year. This is how we were able to discover and remember wonderful texts such as "The Nightmare Before Christmas", "The Little Match Girl", "The Two Christmas Trees" and "The Little Shoes".
