Christmas Music: Santa Baby
Santa Baby, chanson de Christmas écrite en 1953 par Joan Javits, nièce du sénateur Jacob K. Javits, et par un compositeur du nom de Philip Springer, connut un immense succès lorsque Eartha Kitt lui prêta sa voix. Contrairement aux autres chansons traditionnelles diffusées pendant la période des fêtes, Santa Baby ne fait aucunement mention des festivités, ni des réunions familiales. Les paroles qu’elle contient énumèrent plutôt une liste de cadeaux quelque peu excentriques, et adressée au Santa Claus. Néanmoins, bien que ces paroles aient pu en offusquer quelques-uns à l’époque, rappelons que la chanson se voulait plutôt du genre pince-sans-rire.
The very first version of "Santa Baby" proved much more popular than the second, even though both were recorded by Eartha Kitt. The 1954 version, titled "This Year Santa Baby," featured in the film "Driver Miss Daisy," was indeed a flop. In 1963, a much more uptempo version was featured in the film "New Faces," and this version was also the one that inspired singer Madonna to include on her charity album, "A Very Special Christmas."
Interestingly, "Santa Baby" is one of the few Christmas songs to have been performed exclusively by female artists. These singers include Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Ally McBeal, LeAnn Rimes, and Maria Carey. However, in 2011, Michael Bublé decided to produce a completely new version of "Santa Baby" on his Christmas album, which, however, underwent some modifications to make it a little more masculine.
