Christmas Music: Come Divine Messiah
Venez divin Messie se veut probablement l’un des plus anciens cantiques de Christmas qui soit, car selon toute vraisemblance, il remonterait à une époque fort lointaine. Toutefois, puisqu’il ne subsiste que très peu de traces de ce chant pourtant si populaire, rien ne permet de situer l’année exacte où il fut composé. Quant à son auteur, il s’agirait de l’Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, né en 1663, et décédé en 1745, ce qui laisse présumer que Venez divin Messie aurait été écrit fin des années 1600, début des années 1700.
Néanmoins, on peut affirmer avec certitude qu’il émane de la religion chrétienne en raison des paroles qu’il contient, celles-ci évoquant l’attente du peuple israélien avant la naissance de l’enfant Jesus. Qui plus est, les paroles figurant dans la version originale seraient issues de deux passages de l’Évangile, l’un selon Jean, et l’autre des Éphésiens.
Some claim that Come Divine Messiah originated in France, as the story goes, many refugees from the French Revolution were the originators of Christmas carols. Among other bits of information gleaned here and there, we discover that the melody is derived from an old Christmas tune, sung at Midnight Mass, called "Let Your Animals Graze." However, the lyrics that everyone hums today are not those contained in the original version, which have been modified over the years.
