Christmas Music: Jingle Bells Original and Video

Jingle Bells est l’un des chants de Christmas les plus connus à travers le monde, et dont James Lord Pierpont, compositeur et organiste américain, en est l’auteur. Le célèbre Jingle Bells a été composé à l’ancienne Taverne Simpson de Medford au Massachussetts, aujourd’hui devenue le 19 High Street du Medford Square. D’ailleurs, une plaque commémorative orne toujours le côté du bâtiment, sur laquelle on peut y lire en gros titres « Jingle Bells composed here ».

The song was originally titled "The One Horse Open Sleigh." According to the Medford Historical Society, Pierpont was inspired by the sleigh races that were popular in the city in the 1800s. It wasn't until September 16, 1857, that the title was changed to its current one.

In 1898, Jingle Bells was first recorded on a phonograph cylinder by the Edison Male Quartette, as part of a Christmas medley called "Sleigh Ride Party." For the sake of argument, the phonograph cylinder was the first commercially available method for recording and reproducing sound.

In 1943, the late Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters recorded Jingle Bells, which sold over a million copies. Previously, Benny Goodman and the Glenn Miller Orchestra had also had success with the song, reaching number 18 respectively.^e and the 5^e position in the charts. Then, in 1948, it was adapted into French by Francis Blanche, who then gave it the title Vive le vent.

In France, this adaptation of Vive le vent is very popular and several singers have performed it, including Mireille Mathieu, Dalida and Thierry Gali, the new darling of children.

Jingle Bells has also been performed and recorded by Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Preslye, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Diana Krall, Boney M, to name a few.

Jingle Bells a aussi fait l’objet d’une mémorable plaisanterie depuis l’espace. En 1965, histoire de s’amuser, l’astronaute Walter M. Schirra Jr., alors commandant de la mission Gemini 6, avait improvisé toute une mise en scène avec l’aide de son compagnon de vol Thomas Stafford. Ce dernier, connu pour son sérieux, avait alors annoncé l’apparition d’un OVNI, et les deux hommes avaient fait durer le suspense pendant de longues minutes, avant de déclarer qu’il s’agissait en fait du Santa Claus à bord de son traîneau. La farce s’était terminée avec les premières notes de Jingle Bells jouées par Schirra sur son harmonica, alors que Stafford avait agité des clochettes.
