Christmas around the world: in Australia

The tradition
On Christmas morning, children receive their gifts and have fun all day. The festivities culminate on the evening of December 25th. Families and close friends gather to enjoy Christmas dinner and exchange gifts. As in many countries, roast turkey is part of the Australian Christmas table, as is ham. Seafood platters are served as starters, and for dessert, the famous Pavlova, a typical dessert served with whipped cream.
It's common to see Australians on the beach on Christmas Day. It's a tradition for foreign visitors to head to Bondi Beach in Sydney to join the festive spirit with the locals. Over 40,000 people visit the beachfront on this day. Since 1937, the tradition of singing Christmas carols by candlelight outdoors in the evening continues. The song "Christmas Day" by John Wheeler and Six White Boomers by Rolf Harris are the two truly Australian Christmas songs.
