Christmas Music: Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Composée et interprétée par le regretté John Lennon, ex-membre des Beatles, Happy Xmas (War is Over) figure parmi les classiques de Christmas. Elle ne diffère guère des autres chansons pacifistes précédemment écrites par Lennon, si ce n’est qu’au niveau des paroles, lesquelles faisaient référence cette fois-ci à la période de Noël. Rappelons que le chanteur, depuis qu’il faisait carrière en solo, avait auparavant endisqué plusieurs chansons de ce genre, dont notamment Imagine et Give Peace a Chance.
However, originally, Happy Xmas was not intended to be a song, but rather a slogan, created in 1969, and used as part of an advertising campaign. Wishing to make a call for peace in the face of the Vietnam War, which had been going on for about ten years, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono had both created this slogan. However, it was only after crossing the borders of several countries that this advertising campaign finally became a song. Having long cherished the dream of one day popularizing a Christmas musical composition, John Lennon decided in 1971 to use this slogan to turn it into a song, which he recorded with his wife and the Harlem Choirs.
Le succès ne fut toutefois pas immédiat, et le single d’abord endisqué aux États-Unis ne parvint même pas à se hisser au palmarès. Lors d’une seconde tentative en 1972, Happy Xmas fut lancé à travers le monde, et cette fois-ci, l’objectif fut atteint. La chanson devint rapidement très célèbre, plus particulièrement au Royaume-Uni, où elle obtint une seconde place au palmarès. Malheureusement, le décès tragique de John Lennon, assassiné devant sa résidence le 8 décembre 1980, contribua fortement à la popularité de sa seule chanson de Noël, qui désormais, figure parmi les plus téléchargées de tous les temps.
