Christmas music: Feliz Navidad

En 1970, José Feliciano, chanteur et guitariste aveugle, peu connu jusqu’à cette date, connaissait la gloire avec cette chanson qui allait devenir un classique de Christmas, Feliz Navidad. En effet, avec un refrain aussi entraînant, « Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad », le succès fut immédiat, et ce, même si peu de gens en comprenaient les paroles, lesquelles se traduisent par « Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year » (Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année). Populaire dès sa sortie aux États-Unis, Feliz Navidad a rapidement franchi les frontières des Philippine et du Canada, et aujourd’hui, cette chanson de Noël tourne encore autant sur les ondes radiophoniques.

Furthermore, Feliz Navidad is one of the most downloaded songs in North America, and what's more, it's among the 25 most recorded and streamed Christmas songs worldwide. Although many artists have recorded it, the original version performed by José Feliciano remains the most popular of all. While famous singers, such as Céline Dion, Michael Bublé, and the band Boney M, have also had success with Feliz Navidad, no one has been able to match José Feliciano's success.

Beaucoup moins populaire cependant que la chanson, le film « Nothing Like The Holidays : Feliz Navidad » (Noël en famille, version francophone), n’a récolté que de mauvaises critiques. Bien que Feliz Navidad ait donné birth à ce film, il n’a pourtant rien en commun avec la chanson, si ce n’est que l’histoire se déroule au sein d’une famille de même nationalité que José Feliciano, soit portoricaine.
