Christmas Music: Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)
En 1947, Gene Autry, chanteur bien connu pour ses chansons de Christmas devenues fort populaires, eut l’idée d’en composer une autre, alors qu’il participait au défilé du Père Noël à Los Angeles. Après avoir franchi le parcours à dos de cheval, et avoir entendu sans cesse la foule scander Here Comes Santa Claus (Voici le Père Noël), l’inspiration lui vint alors d’écrire un tel chant. Sollicitant l’aide d’Oakley Haldeman, auteur-compositeur, tous deux donnèrent birth à la chanson Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane). Celle-ci fut d’abord endisquée sur un single démo, avec la voix du chanteur-guitariste Johnny Bond, qui utilisa des cubes glaces afin de reproduire les sons des grelots.
Gene Autry, who had already achieved enormous success with Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, recorded a version of his own, but with real bells instead of ice cubes. The song then reached number 9 on the Billboard charts, and its success only grew. However, the most popular version belongs to the late Elvis Presley, and it is this one that can still be heard on the radio today.
Many other singers have recorded versions of the song "Here Comes Santa Claus." These include Bing Crosby, Doris Day, The Andrews Sisters, Willie Nelson, Billy Idol, and Maria Carey, to name a few. Although more than fifty years have passed since its first airplay, "Here Comes Santa Claus" remains one of the most-played Christmas songs.
