Christmas Music: Jingle Bell Rock
En 1957, Bobby Helms, chanteur américain country, interprétait une toute nouvelle song of Christmas intitulée Jingle Bell Rock, laquelle allait devenir un classique de tous les temps. Les co-auteurs, Joseph Carlton Beal, responsable des relations publiques, et James Ross Boothe, auteur publicitaire, se sont inspirés d’une autre chanson de Noël fort populaire, Jingle Bells, ainsi que d’anciennes chansons datant des années 1950 pour composer celle-ci. Dès sa première diffusion sur les ondes radiophoniques, Jingle Bell Rock connut un immense succès, et depuis, chaque année, pendant la période des fêtes, les stations lui accordent un passage régulier et fréquent.
Bobby Helms' version remains the most popular of all, although Brenda Lee's version did manage to reach the top spot on the Billboard Christmas singles chart twice, in 1964 and 1967 respectively. Jingle Bell Rock was also recorded in 1968 by Bill Haley And His Comets, the band that popularized the song Rock Around The Clock. However, this version, which everyone considered lost and suddenly rediscovered in the mid-90s, only appeared on the airwaves during this period, but achieved very little success.
Today, Jingle Bell Rock has lost none of its popularity and is now one of the most widely played Christmas songs. Over time, many artists have covered it and recorded it in their own way, including The Beatles, Amy Grant, Neil Diamond, Hall & Oates, Billy Idol, and of course, singer Brenda Lee, as well as a few other more or less well-known singers. The famous Jingle Bell Rock can also be heard in several films and TV episodes.
