Christmas Music: Deck The Halls

Deck The Halls, chanson populaire de Christmas pourtant fredonnée par des milliers de gens, ne semble provenir à la fois de nulle part, mais aussi de plusieurs sources. En fait, on croit que ses premières origines pourraient remonter jusqu’au XVIe siècle, alors qu’à cette époque lointaine, les chants de Noël constituaient plutôt des airs sur lesquels les gens dansaient. Ainsi, Deck The Halls aurait, selon toute vraisemblance, servi d’accompagnement à une danse folklorique. C’est du moins ce que laisse transparaître le manuscrit d’un harpiste dénommé John Parry Ddall, et publié en 1784, dans lequel y se trouve la mélodie.

However, these few words "Fa La La," repeated many times in the song, are said to come from a medieval ballad, and to have appeared in the 19th century. They are also found in an old winter song, entitled Nos Galan, while the music appears in an 18th-century work by Mozart, and was used for a piano and violin duet. However, the English lyrics that everyone sings today are in no way a translation of the manuscript written by John Parry Ddall, nor are they a transposition of the song Nos Galan. It is known, however, with certainty that an 1881 publication, entitled Franklin Square Song Collection, mentions these words.

Bref, il s’agit là d’une autre chanson de Noël dont les origines demeurent incertaines et non confirmées officiellement, ce qui n’a toutefois pas empêché Deck The Halls de connaître un franc succès. D’ailleurs, tout récemment, ce chant figurait tant au Billboard Country qu’au Billboard américain. Parmi les artistes les plus connus à avoir endisqué Deck The Halls, on y retrouve notamment Julie Andrews, The Trapp Family Singers, Loretta Lynn, The Everly Brothers, Nat King Cole, The Commodores, Barenaked Ladies et Justin Bieber. Quant à la version francophone, elle a été popularisée par le groupe Bundock. Deck the Halls a également donné birth à un film du même titre, produit en 2006, et mettant en vedette Danny DeVito.
