Now considered a Christmas classic, Winter Wonderland was written in 1934 by composer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard B. Smith.

The story goes that Smith, a native living in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, was inspired to write this song after seeing Honesdale's Central Park covered in snow. He reportedly wrote the lyrics while being treated at the sanitarium for tuberculosis, a disease known at the time as consumption.

The original recording of Winter Wonderland was made in 1934 by Richard Himber and the Hotel Carelton Orchestra on the RCA Blue Bird label. Several versions were subsequently released, but the one with the introduction composed by Guy Lombardo's orchestra reached the Top 10. Singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer later released his own version, which reached number 4.e Billboard chart position in 1945. During the same season, Perry Como reached the Top 10 with his famous Winter Wonderland.

Some of the lyrics in the original version, which mentioned that a couple had spontaneously decided to get married, were considered unsuitable for children. Therefore, it was necessary to replace this first version with another one.

Additionally, additional lyrics referencing Parsons Brown, a minister who traveled from village to village to perform weddings, also contributed to the modification of the original version. Since this tradition was no longer part of the American cultural scene, Parsons Brown's name was changed to Circus Clow. However, some musicians performed and recorded the song using both verses.

Louis Armstrong, The Andrews Sisters, Tony Bennet, The Carpenters, Ray Charles, Air Supply, Michael Bolton, Pat Boone, Billy Idol, Engelbert Humperdinck, Bing Crosby and Doris Day are just a few of the many who have performed the famous Winter Wonderland.

Translated into French under the title "Au royaume du bonhomme hiver", the song was performed by many artists, such as Roch Voisine, Claude Valade, Tino Rossi, Fernand Gignac, Laurent Brunetti, Mitsou and Ginette Reno, to name a few.

Most popular video clip on Youtube

Winter wonderland – music et paroles

Jason Mraz's performance – on beautiful winter images

Lyrics in French version

Listen to the bells, of the joyful holiday season
Announcing the joy of every beating heart
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter

Under the falling snow, the sleigh wanders
Sowing our love songs all around
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter

There he is smiling in the square
His hat, his cane and his scarf
He seems to tell us in a good-natured tone
Don't you see it's late?

He's telling the truth all the same, near the fire, I'll take you
Let's warm up in privacy
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter

Listen to the bells, of the joyful holiday season
Announcing the joy of every beating heart
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter

Under the falling snow, the sleigh wanders
Sowing our love songs all around
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter

There he is smiling in the square
His hat, his cane and his scarf
He seems to tell us in a good-natured tone
Don't you see it's late?

He's telling the truth all the same, near the fire, I'll take you
Let's warm up in privacy
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter
In the Kingdom of Snowman Winter

English version lyrics

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight.
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parsons Brown

He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
When you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kids knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Christmas Melody Origin and History of the Song Although strictly performed during the holiday season, Winter Wonderland is more of a song referring to winter.
