Later, goblins were described as strange little figures burrowing underground. They were also associated with the forest world and, in particular, with the magic mushroom, which was said to be part of the psychedelic culture of these hidden inhabitants of nature.<\/p>\n

Historians wonder if it might actually be an allegory of Santa Claus, himself inspired by the character of Saint Nicholas. Author Clement Clarke Moore was the first to refer to these elves in a text he wrote under the title "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (the visit of Saint Nicholas) published in the New York newspaper "Sentinel" in 1823. In this tale, the elves evoke friendly little creatures who assist Saint Nicholas in distributing gifts to children. This story was translated into several languages and its distribution spread throughout the world.<\/p>\n

Over time, the role of elves became more closely associated with Santa Claus and took on more responsibility. It is now said that they are the ones who take care of the reindeer, keep the sleigh in good condition, help wrap gifts, check the Christmas distribution list, and most importantly, keep Santa's address well hidden from everyone.
