Carrying small lit candles and images of Mary and Joseph, these "pilgrims" go from house to house looking for a place to stay. Each "innkeeper" refuses to accommodate them, until they arrive at the home of the family chosen as Las Posadas hosts that evening. Once inside, people gather around the nativity scene to pray and sing traditional Christmas carols. Then, the festivities begin and the children take turns hitting a "pi\u00f1ata" (a papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 representation of an animal or character containing candy and surprises), a symbol of the shared joy of Christmas.<\/p>\n

In China, where the Christian population is relatively small, Christmas is not a public holiday. However, Chinese Christians light up their homes with pretty lanterns and hang paper decorations\u2014chains, flowers, and lanterns\u2014on "illuminated trees." Children also hang burlap stockings to Dun Che Lao Ren<\/em> ("the old man of Christmas") to fill them with gifts and little treats.<\/p>\n
