N\u00e9anmoins, on sait que la m\u00e9lodie a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e par un d\u00e9nomm\u00e9 William B. Sandys en 1833, lequel n\u2019en est toutefois pas l\u2019auteur. \u00c0 titre de preuve, dans un ouvrage paru ant\u00e9rieurement, ce chant y figure, sans que n\u2019y soit cependant cit\u00e9 le nom de l\u2019auteur. Puisqu\u2019il ne subsiste que tr\u00e8s peu de traces de cette <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blognoel.com\/en\/christmas-songs\/\">song<\/a>, on ne peut non plus attribuer les paroles \u00e0 aucun compositeur illustre ou non. <\/p>\n<p>The melody of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen comes from an Aeolian mode, an old-fashioned name once used in ancient Greece to designate the scale of &quot;A.&quot; Another noteworthy fact is that in the original title, there is a comma between the words Merry and Gentlemen. According to the rules of French punctuation, the comma normally marks a short pause in reading. Based on this rule, Merry would therefore not refer to Merry Gentlemen, which seems somewhat odd, and makes little sense. <\/p>\n<p>In short, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen remains a classic Christmas carol, and is still frequently played on radio during the holiday season.
