The santons that decorate European nativity scenes are said to have originated in Provence at the beginning of the 16th century.e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. En effet, comme \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9glise on pr\u00e9sentait une cr\u00e8che \u00ab\u00a0vivante\u00a0\u00bb pour rappeler la Nativit\u00e9, ces petits personnages qu\u2019on appelait \u00ab\u00a0les santoun\u00a0\u00bb (petits saints) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9s pour garnir la cr\u00e8che de Christmas<\/a> dans les familles proven\u00e7ales.<\/p>\n

In 1803, in Marseille (France), a first Santon Fair was organized; the tradition has continued, since it still takes place today from the end of November to the beginning of each year in the Old Port. Over time, the painted santons were covered with traditional clothing, tailored to their size, each indicating the characteristics of their profession.<\/p>\n

The materials<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the first santons were made from breadcrumbs, it was gradually the red clay of Provence that became the raw material. The clothes are generally made from fabrics typical of the region. Over the years, the village was added, to be arranged all around the nativity scene, consisting of miniature terracotta dwellings of all kinds and various colors.<\/p>\n

The main characters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outre l\u2019Enfant-Jesus<\/a>, Marie et Saint-Joseph, les bergers et les Rois Mages, on compte une large famille de santons repr\u00e9sentant des animaux ainsi que des artisans et autres personnes du peuple. Par exemple, le cur\u00e9, le tambourinaire, le p\u00eacheur, la poissonni\u00e8re, le porteur d\u2019eau, la fermi\u00e8re, le jardinier, le meunier. Mais aussi l\u2019aveugle et son fils, le Bartoumieu \u00e0 l\u2019allure n\u00e9glig\u00e9e, la boh\u00e9mienne et son b\u00e9b\u00e9, l\u2019idiot du village appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0le ravi\u00a0\u00bb, et Marius (inspir\u00e9 du personnage attachant, d\u2019Alphonse Daudet, nomm\u00e9 Tartarin).<\/p>\n

Finally, there is also the angel, the official messenger of the birth of the Child Jesus. The most famous in Provence is called Boufareu (the one who blows); he plays the trumpet to guide people to the stable. His place is just above the manger.<\/p>\n
