In the city of Trieste, however, it is Saint Nicholas who holds this office on December 6th. On January 6th, sweets are given by the fairy Befana to good children and coal is given to those who have been unruly. On Christmas Day, however, Father Christmas (Babbo Natale) visits houses to offer "rich gifts."

In Germany:

Children are convinced that Saint Nicholas is the one who fills the boots or stockings they place in front of the house on December 6th. The next day, they will find sweets, fruit, and nuts inside. Legend has it that Saint Nicholas is accompanied by Father Fouettard, who is responsible for punishing children who have been naughty. Special gifts will be placed under the tree and unwrapped only on the evening of December 24th or the following day.

The tradition of giving gifts for Christmas or New Year's originated in the Christian world in the 18th century.
