Known for his generosity and protection of children, he quickly became a very popular saint in Europe. Legend has it that he helped the poor by slipping gold coins or gifts into shoes left on the doorstep.

In Europe, particularly in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and eastern France, the feast of Saint Nicholas, celebrated on December 6, has remained very much alive. It perpetuates the idea of a bearded old man distributing gifts to good children. But, alongside him, a darker figure also appears: the Father Christmas, responsible for punishing disobedient children.

When Dutch settlers came to America in the 17th century, they brought with them the tradition of Sinterklaas. The latter will gradually become Santa Claus, direct ancestor of our Father Christmas.

Santa Claus Info: https://www.noel-vert.com/lunivers-de-noel/histoire-pere-noel

🎁 The American Evolution: From Santa Claus to World Star

The real turning point in the history of Santa Claus took place in the United States. In 1823, the poem “A Visit from St.Nicholas”, better known under the title The Night Before Christmas, first describes a cheerful old man traveling in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

A few decades later, the cartoonist Thomas Nast popularizes his image in American newspapers: a plump old man with a white beard and red clothes trimmed with fur. Santa Claus is born.

In the 20th century, a company would definitively fix its appearance in the collective imagination: Coca-ColaIn the 1930s, the brand commissioned cartoonist Haddon Sundblom to create advertising posters depicting Santa Claus. The character, dressed in bright red, smiling and good-natured, traveled the world thanks to the brand's marketing power. Since then, this image has dominated everywhere.

🌍 A universal character with a thousand faces

While Santa Claus as we know him is largely inspired by the American model, many cultures have kept or adapted their own traditions.

In Spain and in Latin America, children often receive their gifts from Three Wise Men January 6th.

In Italy, there Befana, a kind old woman, distributes gifts on the night of Epiphany.

In Russia, It is Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost), accompanied by his granddaughter Snegurochka, who comes to offer gifts for the New Year.

In the Nordic countries, we find similar figures, such as the Julenisse in Norway.

So, Santa Claus can be seen as a universal figure of the gift, but whose appearance and name vary according to cultures.

🔎 Santa Claus as seen by anthropologists

From an anthropological point of view, Santa Claus is not just a simple festive character: he embodies a ritualization of giving and generosityInspired by religious traditions but also by pagan customs linked to the winter solstice, it takes part in the cycle of festivals which mark the end of the year.

Anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss explored Santa Claus in his article "The Tortured Santa Claus" (1952). He analyzed the character as a ritual figure: immortal, generous, and bearer of social values. According to him, Santa Claus is a kind of modern deity, accepted by children and adults alike, because he symbolizes social order, family, and sharing.

Other researchers point to a connection with ancient Norse traditions: the god Odin, who rode a flying horse and distributed gifts at the solstice, may have inspired some aspects of modern Santa Claus.

📖 Amazing anecdotes about Santa Claus

Santa's Mail Every year, millions of letters are sent to Santa Claus. For example, researchers have calculated the speed his sleigh would have to reach to deliver gifts to all the children in the world in one night: it would have to travel at more than 10,000 times the speed of sound! Of course, this is just a scientific game and a joke, but these calculations show how much Santa Claus also inspires rational minds.

🤔 Why do we still believe in Santa Claus?

From a psychological perspective, believing in Santa Claus is an important stage in a child's development. Between the ages of 3 and 7, children love to believe in magic and stories. Santa Claus fuels their imagination, their sense of expectation, and their ability to dream. Even when the truth is revealed, the myth remains positive because it leaves a strong emotional imprint.

For adults, Santa Claus is no longer a belief, but he remains a symbol of nostalgia, tradition and intergenerational connection.

🎅 Bien plus qu’un personnage, un miroir de nos sociétés

Santa Claus is at once a legacy of ancient traditions, a modern cultural creation, and a universal symbol.
