\ud83c\udf84 The origins: from Saint Nicholas to Santa Claus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The story of Santa Claus has its roots in the figure of Saint Nicholas<\/a><\/strong>, Bishop of Myra (in present-day Turkey) in the 4th century. Known for his generosity and protection of children, he quickly became a very popular saint in Europe. Legend has it that he helped the poor by slipping gold coins or gifts into shoes left on the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Europe, particularly in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and eastern France, the feast of Saint Nicholas<\/strong>, celebrated on December 6, has remained very much alive. It perpetuates the idea of a bearded old man distributing gifts to good children. But, alongside him, a darker figure also appears: the Father Christmas<\/strong>, responsible for punishing disobedient children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Dutch settlers came to America in the 17th century, they brought with them the tradition of Sinterklaas<\/em>. The latter will gradually become Santa Claus<\/strong>, direct ancestor of our Father Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real turning point in the history of Santa Claus took place in the United States. In 1823, the poem \u201cA Visit from St.Nicholas\u201d<\/strong>, better known under the title The Night Before Christmas<\/em>, first describes a cheerful old man traveling in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • In the Nordic countries, we find similar figures, such as the Julenisse<\/strong> in Norway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    So, Santa Claus can be seen as a universal figure of the gift<\/strong>, but whose appearance and name vary according to cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    From an anthropological point of view, Santa Claus is not just a simple festive character: he embodies a ritualization of giving and generosity<\/strong>Inspired by religious traditions but also by pagan customs linked to the winter solstice, it takes part in the cycle of festivals which mark the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Anthropologist Claude L\u00e9vi-Strauss explored Santa Claus in his article "The Tortured Santa Claus" (1952). He analyzed the character as a ritual figure: immortal, generous, and bearer of social values. According to him, Santa Claus is a kind of modern deity, accepted by children and adults alike, because he symbolizes social order, family, and sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Other researchers point to a connection with ancient Norse traditions: the god Odin, who rode a flying horse and distributed gifts at the solstice, may have inspired some aspects of modern Santa Claus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
