Christmas Around the World Series: in New York (America)

Fait connu, à New York, comme dans toute l’Amérique, Christmas constitue un moment privilégié de l’année. Occasion par excellence de retrouvaille dans la famille et entre amis, de festivités dans les rues, les restaurants et les bars de la ville, qui déborde de décorations illuminées.

A classic!

Celebrating Christmas in New York is a classic movie, with its giant illuminated tree at Rockefeller Center from the beginning of December. It's also the tallest in the world! A quick trip to the nearby ice rink is part of the tradition, as is a visit to the UNICEF store, topped with a gigantic snowflake, located on 5th Avenue. Christmas carols and songs can be heard throughout the main avenues of the Big Apple.

Starting the evening of December 24th by attending a performance of The Nutcracker (by the New York City Ballet) at the famous Lincoln Center has become a New York tradition. Don't forget to visit the wonders of the Bryant Park Christmas Market during the day.

Traditions

Everyone who came from elsewhere to settle in this great country brought their traditions with them. However, generally, the whole family participates in decorating the interior and exterior of the house. The illuminated tree, laden with Christmas-themed decorations, delights young and old alike.

The traditional dish is undoubtedly a roasted and stuffed turkey or a nice piece of beef as a main course. Hot and cold side dishes complete a generous table bursting with flavor. The hostess serves guests the traditional eggnog (Egg Nog) – flavored with rum for the adults – and enhanced with a pinch of nutmeg. In the lobby of grand hotels in New York (and other American cities), a large carafe of Egg Nog awaits guests upon arrival.
