Where does the tradition of giving gifts to children at Christmas come from?

La tradition d’offrir des présents pour Christmas ou le Nouvel An tire son origine du monde chrétien, au 18^e century. While the context of this exchange was initially religious, it became much more festive over time. However, the way they are received differs from one country to another.

In France : les enfants déposent un soulier (ou deux) au pied du sapin, la veille de Noël. Si autrefois le gift était généralement alimentaire (fruits ou bonbons), ils sont désormais achetés par les parents dans les nombreux magasins et boutiques. Dès le lendemain, les enfants se précipitent pour découvrir les cadeaux que Père Noël a apportés.

In the United States : The tradition of Santa Claus prevails in this country, but it places greater emphasis on the notion of reward. Indeed, one must have been good throughout the year to deserve his gifts. These are presented by parents at the grand unveiling that takes place on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

In Great Britain : Children hang up very large fake stockings on Christmas Eve, which Santa Claus will fill during the night. The action takes place the following morning.

In Spain : gifts are exchanged on January 6, the feast of the Epiphany, in memory of the Magi who brought gifts to the Child Jesus.

In Italy: Gifts are given to children by Saint Lucy on December 13th. In the city of Trieste, however, it is Saint Nicholas who holds this office on December 6th. On January 6th, sweets are given by the fairy Befana to good children and coal is given to those who have been unruly. On Christmas Day, however, Father Christmas (Babbo Natale) visits houses to offer "rich gifts."

In Germany:

Children are convinced that Saint Nicholas is the one who fills the boots or stockings they place in front of the house on December 6th. The next day, they will find sweets, fruit, and nuts inside. Legend has it that Saint Nicholas is accompanied by Father Fouettard, who is responsible for punishing children who have been naughty. Special gifts will be placed under the tree and unwrapped only on the evening of December 24th or the following day.
