Musique de Noël : Santa Baby

Santa Baby, chanson de Noël écrite en 1953 par Joan Javits, nièce du sénateur Jacob K. Javits, et par un compositeur du nom de Philip Springer, connut un immense succès lorsque Eartha Kitt lui prêta sa voix. Contrairement aux autres chansons traditionnelles diffusées pendant la période des fêtes, Santa Baby ne fait aucunement mention des festivités, ni des réunions familiales. Les paroles qu’elle contient énumèrent plutôt une liste de cadeaux quelque peu excentriques, et adressée au Père Noël. Néanmoins, bien que ces paroles aient pu en offusquer quelques-uns à l’époque, rappelons que la chanson se voulait plutôt du genre pince-sans-rire.

La toute première version de Santa Baby s’est avérée beaucoup plus populaire que la seconde, et ce, bien que toutes deux aient été enregistrées par Eartha Kitt. Celle datant de 1954, intitulée This Year Santa Baby, et figurant dans le film Miss Daisy et son chauffeur, fut effectivement un échec. En 1963, une autre version beaucoup plus rythmée se fit entendre dans le film New Faces, et celle-ci se veut d’ailleurs la version dont la chanteuse Madonna s’est inspirée pour l’inclure sur son album de bienfaisance, «A Very Special Christmas».

Fait à noter, Santa Baby se veut l’une des rares chansons de Noël à n’avoir été interprétée que par des artistes féminins. Parmi ces chanteuses, s’y trouvent notamment Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Ally McBeal, LeAnn Rimes et Maria Carey. Toutefois, en 2011, Michael Bublé décidait de produire une toute nouvelle version de Santa Baby sur son album de Noël, laquelle a cependant subi quelques modifications pour la rendre un peu plus masculine.
