Cantique de Noël : The First Noel

Les origines de ce traditionnel cantique des fêtes, The First Noel, semblent quelque peu mystérieuses, et il n’est guère possible d’établir l’année précise où il a été composé. On croit cependant qu’il pourrait remonter au XVIIIe siècle, voire même antérieurement, quoi que l’histoire ne puisse le prouver officiellement. Par contre, en 1823, les paroles de cette chanson ont été publiées dans un répertoire intitulé «Chants anciens et modernes», pour ensuite réapparaître en 1883 dans une autre publication, «Gilbert and Sandys Carols», tous deux édités par William B. Sandys.

Il existe une autre rumeur circulant à l’effet que le refrain contenu dans The First Noel pourrait provenir d’un ancien cantique, chanté autrefois dans les églises, et connu sous le titre The First O Well. Cependant, encore une fois, il ne s’agit là que d’une source qui n’a pu être confirmée. Cet ancien chant de Noël figure aussi à l’occasion sous le titre The First Nowell, dont l’origine découlerait possiblement d’une déformation du mot français Noël, lequel pourrait sans doute être prononcé Nowell par certains.

Bing Crosby se veut l’un des premiers à avoir enregistré The First Noel, mais la version d’Andy Williams demeure l’une des plus populaires. Parmi les autres chanteurs et chanteuses ayant endisqué ce cantique, on y retrouve notamment The Carpenters, Randy Travis, Bob Dylan, Annie Lennox, Andre Rieu et Helmut Lotti.
