Musique de Noël : It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, dont Robert Meredith Willson en est l’auteur, remonte en 1951, et aurait apparemment été écrite alors que ce compositeur séjournait au Grand Hotel de Yarmouth en Nouvelle-Écosse. Bien qu’aucune preuve ne puisse étayer cette affirmation, c’est du moins ce que laisse croire la rumeur circulant à cet effet. Certes, il existe bel et bien un arbre sur le terrain de cet hôtel, tel que le mentionnent d’ailleurs certaines paroles contenues dans ce chant de Noël, « Tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well », et l’on prétend que Willson en aurait été inspiré. Toutefois, puisque de nombreux hôtels à travers le monde portent ce nom, il ne pourrait ne s’agir que d’une simple déduction.

Bref, quoi qu’il soit, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas figure désormais parmi les chansons traditionnelles de Noël, et depuis qu’elle a été diffusée dans le film Home Alone 2 : Lost in New York, sa popularité s’est considérablement accrue. Avec une telle mélodie, il est toutefois dommage que nul n’ait pensé à en faire une traduction française. Néanmoins, les stations radiophoniques francophones lui accordent régulièrement un temps de passage pendant la période des fêtes.

Enregistrée par de nombreux artistes, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas est parvenue à figurer dans le Top 10 des chansons de Noël, notamment après que Johnny Mathis eut endisqué sa propre version. Parmi les autres chanteurs à avoir prêté leur voix à ce chant de Noël, mentionnons Perry Como, Bing Crosby, et plus récemment Michael Bublé.
