Chanson de Noël : Do The Know It’s Christmas

En 1984, alors qu’il regardait un reportage présenté sur la chaîne de télévision américaine BBC, et où l’on y diffusait des images sur la famine qui sévissait en Éthiopie, Midge Ure, guitariste rock, chanteur et compositeur, fut subitement inspiré. Souhaitant amasser des fonds pour venir en aide à la population éthiopienne, il fit appel à Bob Geldof, également chanteur, et tous deux composèrent une chanson intitulée Do They Know it’s Christmas. Celle-ci devint rapidement un énorme succès, et sa popularité se transporta aux quatre coins de la planète.

Néanmoins, avant de connaître une telle célébrité, un groupe dut d’abord être formé, tâche dont s’acquitta Bob Geldof, lequel recruta tous les membres. Ce groupe, nommé Band Aid, réunissait principalement des chanteurs et musiciens irlandais, choisis parmi les plus populaires de l’heure. Outre les co-auteurs, Band Aid regroupait également Phil Collins, Boy George, Paul Mc Cartney, Bono, Chris Cross, David Bowie, Sting, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, Duran Duran, ainsi que plusieurs autres artistes faisant partie de certains groupes les plus illustres.

Do They Know It’s Christmas, endisqué la même année, soit en 1984, fracassait un record, et plus d’un million de copies furent vendues au cours de la première semaine. Par la suite, cette chanson se hissa au numéro un du palmarès, où elle y demeura pendant cinq semaines, pour ensuite devenir celle la plus écoutée pendant la période de Noël. Jusqu’en 1997, Do They Know it’s Christmas constitua le meilleur single vendu de toute l’histoire. Il fut détrôné par Candle in The Wind, enregistré par Elton John, à la mémoire de la princesse de Galles, Lady Diana, décédée dans des circonstances tragiques.
